Making Every Day a Masterpiece

In his book, Make Today Count, John Maxwell, write: “You will never change your life until you change something you do daily…. Every day of your life is merely preparation for the next. What you become is the result of what you are doing today…. The way you live your life today is preparing you for your tomorrow.  The question is, what are you preparing for?” Each footprint the great leader leaves is a direction for the one that follows.

Maxwell’s three simple formulae guide the great leaders’ preparation for their daily journey:

Good Decisions – Daily Discipline = A Plan Without Payoff
Daily Discipline – Good Decisions = Regimentation Without Reward
Good Decisions + Daily Discipline = A Masterpiece of Potential

He offers great leaders Maxwell’s Daily Dozen as a framework for making each day a masterpiece, with each element harmonizing, complementing and strengthening the other:

Attitude: Choose and display the right attitude daily.
Priorities: Determine and act on important priorities daily.
Health: Know and follow Healthy guidelines daily.
Family: Communicate with and care for my family daily. Thinking: Practice and develop good thinking daily.
Commitment: Make and keep proper commitments daily.
Finances: Make and properly manage dollars daily.
Faith: Deepen and live out my faith daily.
Relationships: Initiate and invest in solid relationship daily.
Generosity: Plan for and model generosity daily.
Values: Embrace and practice good values daily.
Growth: Seek and experience improvements daily.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, poet and educator, tells us: “Lives of great men all remind us, we can make our lives sublime, and, departing, leave behind us, footprints on the sands of time.” Choose to make each day your personal masterpiece – one filled with passion, purpose, giving and deep caring and love.  Choose also each day that you will help others, if only one, to create their daily masterpiece – one that will change their life forever in becoming more than they ever dreamed they could be.

Have a beautiful day and a magnificent week!!!

  1. Jack Beach says:

“You will never change your life until you change something you do daily,” sounds like simple common sense; but is a great insight and surprisingly difficult to accomplish. When I worked as an in-house leadership development consultant within the corporate world, the main reason new strategies failed was that people would cheer the new way forward but come in to work the next day and do the same things they had been doing the day before. In addition to stating new goals, we need to help people identify just what it is they have to be doing differently—otherwise, no matter what the rhetoric, the old strategy is still in effect. We are creatures of habit. It is important to help each individual to understand what new behaviors are required and help them monitor their own actions until they became routine.

  2. I love how Family and Relationships are included in this list. Often times, people think of these very important aspects of our lives as unrelated to our success. But being surrounded by people that love and support you encourages success and growth; having someone there to help in time of need or encourage when there is a lapse in hope. Additionally, these relationships are also necessary to stay sane. If life is only about work, career and reaching success, then life would often be depressing and full of woes. However, when there are loved ones to come home to and relationships to build, they can become an escape from the monotonous and a much more fulfilling focus of life. It’s funny how people are the foundation of our lives, but they are often forgotten when it comes to the measure of success.
