The Note We Leave Behind

Someday there will be a final note beside each of our beds, not a list of titles earned, goals achieved or possessions gathered, but a few simple words capturing the person we chose to become. A friend’s father left these words, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” In one humble sentence, he captured a lifetime. Not what he had, but who he had been.

What might your note say? I loved deeply. I cared generously. I gave more than I took. I believed in others. I remained curious. I found joy in ordinary moments. I became more fully myself. I left people and places a little better because I was there. Perhaps your life’s purpose is not something you someday discover and complete. Perhaps it is something you quietly reveal, choice by choice, kindness by kindness, moment by moment, in the being you bring to the life entrusted to you.

And maybe the most beautiful realization is this: you are writing that bedside note now, not at the end of life, but through the way you live each precious moment. Today’s conversation adds a line. Today’s kindness adds another. So does the courage to begin again, the grace to forgive, the willingness to grow and the love you give while there is still time to give it. May you live so that when your final words are written, they require no embellishment, only a humble and grateful I, “I was here. I became. I loved. I gave. I lived my purpose. And I made my moments matter.”

Have a beautiful and wondrous day and a magnificent week!!!
